La localidad que vio nacer al navegante Juan Sebastián Elkano

Old Town hall

The building of the late eighteenth century is located on Main Street, near the present town hall. The sober sandstone ashlars facade is animated only by plate coverings windows, double arcade on the ground floor atrium, now partially blinded and the shield of the town, on the first floor. Getaria weapons, as seen here, include a harpooned whale, symbolizing the importance of whaling had for this port,, as for many other Basque towns, throughout the Middle Ages and Modern. Recent excavations in the town of Getaria have revealed, in fact, that its inhabitants practiced this activity at least since the eleventh century.
